ITINERARY

Day 1
Thursday 16th April: After your direct flight from the UK, meet your Tour Manager and transfer to the 4* Hotel Miramare at Aghios Nikolaos. This comfortable, superbly –located  hotel,  enjoys wonderful views  and easy access to several small, pleasant beaches.

Friday 17th April: AROUND ELOUNDA:  Admire the ancient frescoes glowing jewel-bright in the tiny church of the Panagia Kera at Kritsa. Travel around Mirambellou Bay to Plaka, the inspiration for Victoria Hislop’s award-winning novel, “The Island.” Take the short boat ride to the island itself, hauntingly-beautiful Spinalonga, retracing with your specialist guide the footsteps of those courageous people who created their community against overwhelming odds. Enjoy the ambience – and maybe a delicious Cretan meal in a taverna by the sea – in Elounda, the setting for the intriguing novel and film “Who Pays the Ferryman?”

Day 3
Saturday 18th April: TREASURES OF EASTERN CRETE: Revel in scenery of breathtaking beauty along Crete’s Northern coastline, pausing at the Minoan town of Gournia. Visit the unspoilt harbour town of Siteia with its small but interesting Archaeological Museum. Take in historic Toplou Monastery which, after playing a leading role in the turbulent, courageous history of Crete throughout the centuries, is now home to an outstanding collection of icons. At Vai, enjoy the colour and beauty of Europe’s largest natural palm beach.

Day 4
Sunday 19th April: Day at leisure.

Day 5
Monday 20th April: THE LASITHI PLATEAU:  One of the most beautiful and fertile areas of Crete, its fields and orchards sheltered by the dramatic Dikti Mountains. On this leisurely tour, see how the traditional methods of agriculture, which have sustained the Cretan people for thousands of years, blend seamlessly with the new. An ideal way to round off your travels in Eastern Crete.

Day 6
Tuesday, 21st April: HEADING WEST: En route for Rethymno, step back  into the heart of the Minoan world, whose mysteries will delight your imagination, at the Palace of Knossos, and Heraklion  Archaeological Museum , whose  collection of artefacts - everyday or intricately beautiful -  gives a real flavour of the ancient civilisation which is the cradle of our own. Your hotel, the 4* Theartemis Palace, has been a firm favourite with Living Crete guests for many years.  Ideally located near a sandy beach and an easy walk from the Old Town, it offers the highest standards of comfort and service.

Day 7
Wednesday 22nd April: A leisurely half-day excursion taking in Rethymno’s surrounding countryside, with free time in the city itself to explore the honey-coloured Venetian , Fortezza  and  Old Town.  Rethymno’s excellent Archaeological and Folklore Museums are also well worth a visit.

Day 8
Thursday 23rd April: CHANIA. West through luxuriant scenery to Chania, with its lovely harbour, colourful market and excellent Maritime and Archaeological Museums. The day offers much more, however; we also visit Souda Bay, with its poignant memories of the Battle of Crete of May 1941, and some of the loveliest places on the Akrotiri Peninsula.

Day 9
The White Mountains. A lovely scenic tour taking you through the head of Samaria Gorge, the longest in Europe. Traditional Crete lunch included.

Highlights of CreteDay 10
Saturday 26th April: JEWELS OF THE SOUTH COAST: Through the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge to serene, historic Preveli Monastery, which sheltered so many Allied servicemen during World War 2. After a lunchtime break in the fishing-village of Plakias, return to Rethymno through stunning scenery, calling in at Spili, renowned for its greenery and crystal-clear fountains.

Day 11
Sunday 27th APRIL.  Transfer to Heraklion Airport for your homeward flight.

Your holiday includes

Direct flights between London Gatwick/Manchester and Heraklion with Thomson Airlines, departing at 14:15/14:30 and arriving back at 23:15/23:50 respectively.  20 kgs hold luggage, 5 kgs hand-luggage. Drinks, snacks etc., may be purchased in-flight.

Transfers and excursions as described above. All duties and taxes.  All entry fees.

5 Nights’ Half Board, Hotel Miramare, Aghios Nikolaos. 5 Nights’ Half Board, Theartemis Palace Hotel, Rethymno. Porterage at both hotels.
